Welcome to our Breeding Program: Raising Healthy, Happy, and Well-Socialized German Shepherds

At West Meadow Shepherds we are committed to producing healthy, well-tempered German Shepherds who thrive in family environments. We go above and beyond the industry standard to ensure our dogs are not only physically sound but also mentally and emotionally balanced, making them ideal companions for your family.

What Makes Our Program Unique?

Our program stands out because we focus on both the health and temperament of our dogs. We believe a true family dog is one that is healthy, even-tempered, and comfortable in a variety of situations. With this in mind, we prioritize:

  • Health and Genetics: We perform thorough OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) testing on all of our breeding dogs and extend that testing to more than 200 potential genetic ailments by investing in and completing Embark testing. By doing this, we guarantee that our German Shepherds are not carriers of any hereditary conditions, ensuring healthier puppies for years to come.
  • Temperament: Our dogs are not just physically sound—they are also socialized and trained to be family-oriented. We nurture our puppies with love and care from day one, ensuring they are well-adjusted and ready to adapt to their new homes.
  • Veterinary Care: We maintain a strong relationship with our veterinarian, who plays a key role in helping us ensure the health of our dogs. All our puppies undergo a wellness checkup and receive their first vaccinations at 7-8 weeks, giving them a strong start on their journey to your home.

How Are We Bettering the Breed?

As responsible breeders, we take every step necessary to better the German Shepherd breed. We go beyond traditional health testing by screening our dogs for over 200 potential ailments. This extra effort guarantees that our puppies have the best possible genetic foundation.

Additionally, our commitment to sound breeding practices ensures that we are improving the breed in every generation. We work closely with our veterinarian to continually enhance our knowledge and techniques, resulting in dogs that are not only physically fit but also have well-balanced personalities.

The First 8 Weeks of Your Puppy’s Life

The first few weeks of a puppy’s life are crucial for their development, and we take great care to ensure that each stage is handled with love and attention.

  • Birth to 3 Weeks: Newborn puppies are completely dependent on their mother. They are born blind, deaf, and helpless, relying on her for warmth, nourishment, and care. During this period, puppies experience the following milestones:
    • Birth to 2 Weeks: Puppies begin nursing, and their birth weight typically doubles by the second week.
    • 2 to 3 Weeks: During this time, our family starts gently interacting with the puppies, encouraging them to begin standing and exploring. Their eyes and ears open, and the first baby teeth emerge.
  • 3 Weeks to 12 Weeks (Socialization Period): This is when the puppies begin to learn critical social skills that will serve them throughout their lives. During these weeks, our entire family is involved in socializing the puppies in a variety of environments. This prepares them for life with their new families and helps them adapt to different situations with confidence. Key milestones during this period include:
    • 3 to 4 Weeks: Walking becomes more coordinated, and the puppies begin playing with littermates and humans. The eruption of teeth completes.
    • 5 to 8 Weeks: The puppies start eating solid food, and we begin their early socialization, exposing them to new people, environments, and experiences. Fear responses also begin to surface, and paper training starts. The weaning process begins around 6-8 weeks.
    • 8 Weeks to 12 Weeks: By this time, the puppies are fully weaned from their mother. Activity levels increase, and we start house training. At this stage, their ears begin to stand, and we begin basic training. Puppy placements and “graduations” occur during these weeks.

How Do We Care for Our Mamas and Studs?

Our breeding dogs are beloved members of our family. We place a strong emphasis on their health, happiness, and well-being. The females and males we breed are treated with the utmost care and attention, and we make sure they live fulfilling lives outside of just breeding.

  • Health and Happiness First: Our dogs are not simply breeding dogs; they are treated as family members. We ensure they get the proper care, attention, and physical activity they need to stay happy and healthy. During the summer, they enjoy swimming, family hikes, and evening bonfires with us.
  • Offsite Breeding Dogs: as mentioned before, happiness first. We don’t agree with kennelling our dogs so find homes for dogs who we want to keep apart of the program. The dogs that we keep for breeding are placed in approved, loving homes where they are given the attention they deserve, ensuring they are well-adjusted and content.

Our program focuses on long-term health, sound temperament, and positive experiences, so that when you welcome one of our German Shepherd puppies into your home, you’re getting a loyal, loving, and healthy companion for life. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your family’s journey.

Let me introduce myself!

Hi, I’m Christina, and Shepherds have been a part of my life since I was a teenager. My very first White Shepherd was a rescue that I convinced my mom to bring home. That dog sparked a lifelong love for the breed. Over the years, my mom poured herself into researching and learning, eventually becoming a registered breeder. She mentored with local breeders, worked tirelessly, and turned her passion into a respected breeding program. I was fortunate to learn alongside her and be part of that journey for many years.

Years ago, as my mom began to slow down, she asked me to take over her program. It has been an honour to carry it forward, focusing on quality, health, and the kind of care that makes our Shepherds true family dogs. I have continued building connections with other breeders, constantly learning, and always striving to do better. I do not pretend to know it all. In fact, I welcome collaboration and feedback because the more I learn, the better I can be for my dogs.

Our Shepherds are never kenneled; they live in our home and run free on our farm. They are part of our everyday life, whether that is greeting clients during therapeutic programming with our horses or simply snoring beside us at night. Yes, we can tell whose snore is whose.

Nutrition is also deeply important to me. We feed raw and proudly support Normans Naturals, a locally made kibble. Preparing raw meals, even when it means tackling a freezer full of venison, is one way I commit to giving my dogs the best.

I have always admired the dilute Shepherds and have expanded our program to include the striking Blue Shepherd, as well as Liver and Isabella Shepherds. One day, I also hope to introduce Panda Shepherds into our lines. Every dog we breed is health tested through Embark, which provides DNA screening for breed-relevant conditions, traits, and diversity. These results are accepted by OFA and recognized internationally, giving families confidence in the health and soundness of our Shepherds.

For me, breeding is not just about producing puppies or focusing on a specific colour. It is about raising healthy, confident, and loving companions that bring joy to their families for years to come. The beautiful array of colours in our program is simply a bonus and a matter of personal preference.
